CROSSING OF THE MANCHE
At the beginning of July 1909, three competitors prepare themselves for the first aerial crossing of the Manche: Hubert Latham, the count of Lambert and Louis Blériot. The two one will fail. |

July 25, Louis Blériot come to the camp of the Baraques in Calais with his Blériot XI propelled by a simple 25 CV engine. He takes off at 4am35 early in the morning. He flies above the ocean around a hundred meter during his crossing. At 5am12 he lands in England even he had some difficulties to get over the cliffs of Dover that stood in his way. Charles Fontaine journalist at the Matin wave a French flag for receiving Louis Blériot. Henceforward our Anglo-Saxon neighbours were in an accessible place and not only by the sea but by the air too. |
