JEAN BART

Born in Dunkirk in 1651, dead in 1702, he is a famous sailor who was useful initially under De Ruyter for Holland. But, when this power state was in war against France, Jean Bart returned in his fatherland and illustrated himself like corsair by his exploits. Louis XIV made him come to Versailles, appointed it captain, conferred to him titles of nobility and the rank of head of squadron. Jean Bart pointed out himself in all the naval operations of the war of the league of Augsburg.

It has its place, its monument (the column Jean Bart) and a college with its name in Dunkirk.
