Although born in Paris, George Bernanos (1888-1948) lived in and was marked by the area of Pas-de-Calais. He studied at the Sainte-Marie college in Aire-sur-la-Lys (near Saint-Omer) in 1904 where he read the writers of the French Action movement. He lived in Fressin, small commune of the Country of Montreuil-sur-Mer, where we can still see his house, an old and nice house in the trees. In 1926, the success of his first novel Under the sun of Satan, decides him to make his living by writing; this story occurs in the area of Montreuil-sur-Mer and was the subject of a movie production from Maurice Pialat in 1987 with the actor Gérard Depardieu and the actress Sandrine Bonnaire.I remember having walked between the cables and the spotlights stored for the production of some scenes of film. One day that I accompanied my grandmother, we met Gérard Depardieu who was wearing the clothes of the priest and my grandmother addressed herself to him as if he was the real priest of the parish. And the actor do the same to her!
