AVESNES-SUR-HELPE
Avesnes is one of the fortresses located on the major Helpe that is a tributary of the Sambre. City of 5 000 inhabitants, Avesnes-sur-Helpe is a well-known town for its cheeses: Maroilles and crotte dAvesnes. The stamp celebrates the tying up of Avesnes to France before lots of years under Austrian and Spanish domination. We can see the armorial bearings of the city and especially the tower of collegial Saint Nicolas, which is 60 meters high and has a chiming clock of 68 bells. |
