LE QUESNOY

Number Y&T 1105

Insulated in the countryside, within a framework of greenery and water, near the forest of Mormal, the city of Quesnoy testifies to the military history of the North of France. Perfectly preserved, the fortifications illustrate the special character of old fortified town in Quesnoy. Built out of bricks with stone facings, they present a traverse length whose are ordered the projecting bastions whose sides are connected between them by the walls of defense, or courtines; they constitute an excellent example of the system in Vauban although certain works go back to the time of Charles Quint: the handle bastions go back undoubtedly to this time. While circumventing the ditches, we arrive without any difficulty at the pond of the Red Bridge, then with the lake Vauban which extends to the foot from the ramparts, on both sides of the strengthened door Fauroeulx. From there, like many quercitains formerly, we can admire the harmonious painting formed by the pink brick courtines being reflected in glaucous water.
