LE TOUQUET

In the year 1837, a notary named Alphonse Daloz acquires the field of Touquet located at the mouth of Canche then made up of grounds of sandhills. He plants pines there and other resinous trees and the field thus timbered offers at the end of the century an ideal site of sea and forest which inspires the new vocation and the attractive name of Paris-beach.

The enthusiasm of an English businessman for the area at the end of the XIXème century involves the development of the urbanized field, the multiplication of the equipment, the hotel frequentation. The British presence becomes indissociable of Touquet. Fashionable station dedicated to the sport and elegance during the inter-war period, it becomes the garden of the English Channel with its villas at the edge of alleys in forest. A generation of architects give it its identity marked by the Anglo-Norman style. The city counts approximately 5 000 inhabitants.

It should be noted that the stamp had a mentholated gum on an experimental basis, experiment stopped by fear of demonstrations of allergies (50 million out of 194 million specimens was scented with menthol).
