THE TEXTILE INDUSTRIES

Nord-Pas-de-Calais remains deeply marked by the textile industry which made this area the first textile center of Europe by employing the third of the paid of this branch. We produced there as well as flax, wire, synthetic fibres, jute, wool, ribbons and carpets. Unfortunately, this industry knew a strong decline.

This stamp, emitted at the time of the textile exposure of April 28 to May 20, 1951, represents a shuttle of weaving loom. The press of the time made a bad reception about the composition of the stamp, considering it obscure and without beauty. When Albert Decaris, the draughtsman and engraver of the stamp entrusted to the Bulletin of the philatelic company of Besançon that the composition had been imposed to him by the Federation of the textile, criticisms were done even sourer in the press.
