BOULOGNE-SUR-MER
Boulogne-sur-Mer is a city of 50 000 inhabitants and is the first fishing harbour of France: industrial fishing but also small-scale fishing production, with the subsidiary industries of salting, preserve and freezing. A sculpture is dedicated to the seamen died on the sea. The building and the repair of boats are also present here. It is also a commercial and travellers harbour. If today fish is often treated in the side and then forwarded in refrigerating drays, it was different in the past because fish was bring to Paris in a carriage and pair: the tidal carriers. These last years the tradition was continued as folklore. The spectators are numerous especially where the horses are changed, that takes a few minutes. Boulogne-sur-Mer is also the birthplace of Georges Mathieu, Sainte-Beuve and Valentine Hugo. |
