Town of 40 000 inhabitants, Lens lived of discovered coal in its basement a long time ago, attracting Polish labour after the First War. But it is also a sporting known city for its club headlight, football club of Lens, which was champion of France in 1998 and its public was the best public of France the previous year. It was thus natural that the stage accommodates in 1998 the world cup. It was unfortunately necessary to deplore the aggression of the Nivelle gendarme by hooligans out of the stage.
