THE TAPESTRY OF ARRAS

Number Y&T 2915

The stamp represents the legend of Saint-Vaast and the bear on tapestry of XVth century. According to this legend, the city would have been born from a miraculous fact in VIIth century. In fact it concerns the new city because César speaks already about the powerful city of Atrébates into 59 before J-C. Below the city ran a slow and capricious river, flooding the gardens regularly: Crinchon. Saint-Vaast, installed in the city to fight against paganism there, had made leave a bear out of its den and would have tamed it. The bear would then have indicated to him the place in the marsh of Crinchon where the abbey will be then founded. Strengthened, restored and enriched, this abbey became the heart of the city.

Arras and Paris dispute anteriority in the birth of the art of the tapestry, which goes back to 1300. However, the word Arras remained synonymous with tapestry in English, Italian, Spanish and Polish.
