ARRAS
Chief town of the area of Pas-de-Calais, the city of Arras has 42 000 inhabitants. Its belfry, build from 1463 to 1554 by Jacques Le Caron, was destroyed in October 1914 like the town hall, and then built again from 1924 to 1932 with internal structures made in concrete. The 23 February 1942, a habitant of Arras sends to the field marshal Pétain a project of stamp with an excessive tax for the restoration of the historical monuments. The subject is hold but without the excessive tax because there are too much stamps with taxes. It represents the belfry before 1914. After his destruction by the German, it has been built again in a different style, more tall and slim. It is 75 m height. A 7-meter lion wreathes it.
